This research aims to analyze the relationship between school space and alternative education in the context of participatory design. The subject was examined through the Another School Is Possible Association’s Ankara Cooperation, specifically Private İncek Elementary School (The Curious Cat School). The study aimed to present and uncover spatial processes in schools, such as planning, designing, building, and usage. The case was chosen due to its authenticity as an alternative school experience in Turkey and its repurposed old village school building, which seems contradictory to its educational approach.
The research was conducted through semi-structured interviews with actors involved in spatial processes and workshops conducted with children. The participatory observation method was also employed during workshops. This research was carefully designed to fit school and children's routines. Research participants are considered active researchers in the research processes.
The research results showed that, theoretically, in the processes of spatial production, a compatible and participatory attitude emerged from the alternative education approach. However, in practice, it was observed that this attitude has not yet fully transformed into a consistent practice of creating spaces that holistically accompany the alternative education experience. Nevertheless, this case opened a path for investigation by presenting an example of alternative education and the participatory design processes arising from it.
